New Delhi, November 1: Indian nationals holding e-passports can now use Digi Yatra on select international flights, after trials for international passengers began at seven airports across the country.
The trials, scheduled to run from November to December 2026, are being held at Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Cochin, Mumbai, Chennai and Amritsar airports, according to the Ministry of Civil Aviation. They cover select international flights operated by Air India and IndiGo.
Where passengers can use it
Eligible passengers can use Digi Yatra at terminal entry points, Security Hold Areas and boarding gates, wherever the required infrastructure is in place. Feedback received during the trial period will inform the planning of a wider rollout in 2027.
How to sign up
To use the facility, passengers must create an e-passport-based Verifiable Credential through the Digi Yatra mobile app. The process involves:
- scanning the Machine Readable Zone (MRZ) of the e-passport
- reading the passport’s embedded chip using the Near Field Communication (NFC) feature of a compatible smartphone
- capturing a selfie and verifying the details
The credential is stored in the passenger’s Digi Yatra wallet on the phone and can be used at airport touchpoints enabled for the trials.
Existing checks still apply
The ministry said the facility is meant to complement existing travel processes, not replace them. Passengers must continue to carry their travel documents and complete all mandatory airline document checks, immigration procedures and other travel formalities.
Domestic use so far
Digi Yatra has more than 26.5 million users and has been used for more than 110 million journeys across 39 domestic airports, according to the ministry. A further 25 domestic airports are planned to be covered by 2027.
