Bagdogra, November 7: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday asked the armed forces to maintain a high level of operational readiness at all times, with continuous monitoring across all domains, strong cyber security and attention to the reliability and integrity of information.
He was speaking at Bagdogra Air Force Station in West Bengal on the eve of Diwali, according to the Ministry of Defence.
Changing nature of threats
Mr Singh said modern conflict is no longer limited to conventional fighting along borders. He listed asymmetric and proxy warfare, cyberattacks, drone swarms and disinformation among the threats the forces must prepare for.
He said adversaries tend to avoid direct confrontation and use social media to sow doubt among local people and soldiers. He called Bagdogra strategically important, particularly for the Northeast, and said its personnel act as a strong defensive shield for the eastern region.
Ties with local communities
The minister asked personnel to strengthen relationships with local communities, saying conduct, language and restraint shape the image of the forces. He said closer engagement with local people weakens the designs of adversaries.
Self-reliance and skills
Mr Singh pointed to the growing role of Indian startups and defence industries in drones, counter-drone systems and advanced equipment. He urged personnel to build skills in drone operations and cyber security.
Second tour for Agniveers
The minister also said the Cabinet had approved a “Second Tour of Duty” for Agniveers. Under it, interested Agniveers who meet the selection criteria can join as regular soldiers after completing two years of service. He described the decision as a Diwali gift to them.
Air Chief Marshal Ashutosh Dixit, Air Commodore Manish Sharma, Air Officer Commanding at Bagdogra, and other senior officers were present.
